Beyond HD and Blu-Ray
As the curtain closes on the 2006 NABSHOW, we see the future of video formats and distribution to be so much more than HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. Even though these 2 high def formats are still neck to neck to become to next big thing, we can't help but notice the other major trends that are already happening in the marketplace.
Mobile Nation
More than ever people are watching videos on cell phones, ipods and other portable device. Since ABC has started making their most popular shows available for download from ITunes, downloads have exceeded 1.5 million and counting. VCast from Verizon allows their subscribers to stream live videos and watch it on their phones. It makes perfect sense- in the age of Tivo and IPods, people are getting used to the idea of watching videos when they want and where they want it.
Even in the corporate world, sales presentation, company introduction, training videos are being deployed on mobile devices. Employees who are always on the go can be updated with the latest by simply connecting their mobile device on the computer by RSS feeds. There are no emails and discs to be sent.
Internet TV
Most of us were able to catch the Winter Olympics Games in the comfort of our office thanks to the streaming videos available on the NBC Olympics website, as the events are going on in the other part of the world. It's no wonder internet TV is the next big thing in video distribution. Just a few examples: Google Video is a marketplace for buying and renting video content from major film studios, television network and independent filmmakers. YouTube.com allows users to tag and share original video content. Ifilm.com (part of Viacom) is a video network of movie clips, short films, music videos.
Roo.com is an online broadcasting network, providing video solutions to website such as Verizon.
What does it mean for me?
We should mention that all the websites that were mentioned allow users to upload their own videos for FREE. This opens up numerous opportunities for someone to promote and distribute videos with virtually no budget. Furthermore, internet TV channels are often more highly targeted and specialized, so your audience is sure interested in the subject matter. People with an internet connection will be able to see your creation instantly. Formats, regions and video standards will no longer become an issue.
